Cariboo Radio had a chance to stop in at the Youth Zone Friday January 25th for the Peter Skene Ogden (PSO) Art Show and Rebranding. The event started off with a viewing of the art that the PSO students had on display. Ryan Dugaro “Supervisor of Youth Services” thanked Monique Corno and the students from the PSO for partnering with them for the event. The PSO students had an incredible display of their work, with approximately 40 pieces ranging from abstracts, animals to social media logos. Also, a cool new mural that backdrops the stage that was created by local artist Jasper Pettman.
Ryan Dugaro explained why the name change for the Youth Zone, now called the Raven Youth Activity Centre. “The Youth Zone has been a part of 100 Mile House for many years, almost ten, in fact. We felt that it was important that every generation of local youth has their own space to connect with.” Ryan continued, “We chose the name Raven based on a number of factors, Ravens are a species endemic to 100 Mile House. They’re here all year round, travel in groups. People may be wary of them. They’re attracted to shiny things but mostly, because they’re smart and resourceful. They’re the teenagers of the sky.”
There’re already some changes inside the Raven, such as fixtures, new pool table, lending library, plants and video game systems. A new sign will be put up in the spring. Also, some changes are coming in the programming. Dugaro said, “We would like to be more engaging and work with new community partners to open the space to new groups.” The Raven will remain, and always be, a safe and inclusive place, with the goal of empowering and connecting youth, and I hope you’ll join us on the journey.
Dugaro also acknowledged their funders and supporters that make their work at the Raven possible, such as BC Gaming, United Way, District of 100 Mile House, Red Cross, Pizza Man and CaribooRadio.Com.
