CNC Hosts Outreach Centre for Wildfire Evacuees

VANDERHOOF – The College of New Caledonia’s Vanderhoof campus is the temporary site for a Red Cross outreach centre for evacuees displaced by BC’s wildfires.

“It has been a challenging wildfire season for northern BC,” said Troy Morin, CNC Regional Principal for Fort St James and Nechako. “We are a tight-knit community and CNC supports all those displaced by the wildfires. At times like these it is vital for local agencies and leaders to work with service providers to lift up our communities.”

The Red Cross Outreach Centre will run from Thursday, August 30 to Saturday, September 1 from 10:00am to 6:00pm at the CNC Nechako Campus (3231 Hospital Rd, Vanderhoof BC). Community outreach teams will be on hand to provide early recovery support for those impacted by BC wildfires –individuals and families from areas where evacuation orders have been lifted may be eligible for financial assistance for basic and medical needs. Confidential, one-on-one assessments and referrals to external supports will be available.

Residents under previous evacuation orders that have been lifted can find support information online at www.redcross.ca or by calling the Red Cross at 1-800-863-6582.

Residents under current evacuation orders are asked to go to their nearest reception center or group lodging facility to register with their local authorities, and can find information online at www.emergencyinfobc.gov.bc.ca or by calling Emergency Social Services Call Center at 1-800-585-9559.
